The Diesel Era at Grantham

Above:  the 14:00 from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh, The Heart of Midlothian, speeds towards Grantham station on Thursday 19th September 1963.  The locomotive is D9010, a member of the 22-strong ’Deltic’ class which took over from steam locomotives on the East Coast Main line from 1961 onwards.  In the carriage sidings a railcar awaits its next duty on a branch line service.

The British Railways Modernisation Plan of 1955 set out a plan to replace steam locomotives with electric and diesel traction.  These pages explore how that transition came about in the Grantham area.
