The almost constant activity around the passenger station and the 'Loco' (engine shed) attracted local loco spotters but many more came from far and wide, usually arriving by train.
Other than station platforms (provided you had a ticket) most railway property was off limits for spotters - and for good reason, because the railway was, and still is, a hazardous environment. However, an engine shed and yard full of resting locomotives was sometimes too great a temptation. Signs warned that 'Trespassers will be Prosecuted'. Sometimes boys (often to the surprise of their parents) learned that this could be more than a threat.
